Buying your first toy shouldn't feel like defusing a bomb. Here's what actually matters when you're starting out.
Start with what you're looking for, not what's trending
Before you look at a single product, think about what you actually want out of it: external stimulation, internal stimulation, both, something for solo use, something for a partner. The "best seller" badge on a product doesn't mean it's best for you. It means it sold well for a lot of different people with different goals.
Size: smaller is usually the smarter first move
If you're new to internal toys, start smaller than you think you need. You can always size up later once you know what feels good; you can't shrink a toy that's too much on day one. Most beginner-friendly toys fall in the 3–5 inch insertable length range. Check the specifications on each product page, since this varies toy to toy.
Vibration strength isn't one-size-fits-all
More vibration modes doesn't automatically mean better. What matters is whether the toy has a genuinely gentle low setting, not just "high, higher, and unbearable." If a product description doesn't mention a low-intensity mode, assume it runs strong across the board.
Materials matter more than color
Stick to body-safe, non-porous materials. Medical-grade silicone is the standard to look for. Skip anything described as "jelly" or that doesn't list its material clearly. If a listing is vague about what it's made of, that's usually a sign to keep scrolling.
• Charging takes longer than you'd think.
Most rechargeable toys need 1–2 hours for a full charge, and battery life varies widely. Check the product specs before you're mid-use and it dies.
• Lube isn't optional, it's basic maintenance.
It reduces friction on both your body and the toy's surface. Use water-based lube with silicone toys; silicone-based lube can degrade silicone material over time.
• Cleaning before first use matters.
Wash any new toy with warm water and mild soap before using it for the first time, even though it's packaged new.
• Quiet is a spec worth checking.
If discretion around housemates or thin walls matters to you, look for "whisper-quiet" in the product description, not just "quiet."
